Starting Your Own Bulletin-Billboard Advertising Business
primarily on major highways, expressways or principal traffic arterials.
These giant Bulletin-Billboards are the prestige signs of the outdoor
It is not uncommon to
find advertisers paying over $2000.00 per side. Since the majority of
Bulletin-billboards are double sided (advertisers on both sides) that one
location can bring in over $4000.00 per-month.
These impressive bulletins are available nationwide in a number of sizes.
The most common sizes are 14'x48', 10'x40' and 12'x36'.
You will see them on major expressways, arterials, highways and in commercial
areas. Billboards are "signs" of economic vitality in communities across America. The outdoor advertising industry annually donates over $180,000,000.00 in public service
Lamar Advertising (one of the largest companies in the U.S.) has over 146,000 billboards nationwide, with 2002 revenues of $775,000,000. While Infinity Corporation (a subsidiary of Viacom and also the owners of CBS Television) posted 2003 revenues of $1.7 billion.
As you can see, there is serious money available in this industry. But there are also many small billboard companies. They have fewer billboards up, but they still make a sizable profit! One such company here in the Midwest (A Father/Son built and managed company) recently sold for $13,000,000.00.
How do these various sized companies make so much money? Let's take a moment to see how it works!
Consider you paid
$4,000.00 for a double sided 10'x40' billboard to be built. Since this is double sided, you would be able to place
advertisements on both sides! If you charge each advertiser $1250.00 per month, your billboard would make a gross income of $2500.00 pr month.
The advertisers also pay a one-time production cost. This covers the cost to have his/her
advertisement designed, printed and installed on you billboard. The actual
advertisement is a high quality vinyl material used by most billboard companies. this material is wrapped over the face of the billboard (you could have a local sign company do this, typically a 5 hour project).
Your advertiser now has a high quality vinyl material with his/her ad computer printed onto it. The vinyl, depending on where you live, usually lasts 12 to 18 months before the bright colors begin to fad from
exposure to the sun and other elements. A typical advertising contract would be 12-36 months.
Your Return On Investment, (or R.O.I.), would be approximately 6 months. Your main overhead items will be electricity to illuminate the billboard at night. (This would run around $250.00 per-month) and property lease (The place the billboard is setting on). This will run around $400.00 per month or $4,800.00 per year. A property lease with a land owner is usually for 7 to 10 years.
One other expense would be liability insurance. At a cost of $100.00 per month.
With an income of 2500.00 per month, your income would be $1,750.00 or 60% profit with a
R.O.I. in 6 months.
Now factor in your asset value and the tax benefits, such as depreciation and
amortization. If you are only somewhat knowledgeable at business, I'm sure you can see the compelling
The figures above are approximate. Depending on location, size and traffic count the income per month nationwide is between $1200.00 and $7500.00 per billboard. Also the cost for a billboard structure varies depending on height, size, catwalks and supports.
